A bookworm from an early age, Rachel grew up in Twickenham, Middlesex, loving nothing more than to curl up with a good book and completely lose herself in it. School Parents Evenings tended to consist of teachers remarking that she had a natural gift with words and that she was sure to one day attend the prestigious Oxford or Cambridge Universities.
Unfortunately, Rachel couldn’t really be bothered to live up to these expectations, and so she attended the Nottingham Trent University where she studied English Literature, enjoying reading the many books the syllabus required. But this was where the enjoyment ended for Rachel. Much as she loved reading books, she didn’t particularly revel in the task of writing an essay about them afterwards.
Deciding that (the academic side of) University life was not for her, Rachel set off into the world of work, unsure what she wanted to do with her life. Some years of bar and coffee shop work preceded a long-term job at credit card company Capital One, where she spent a year in the Sales Department before moving to a role working with customers in financial difficulty. She was soon offered a position within the department Training Team where she was responsible for training, coaching and managing new staff. In 2008, Capital One made 750 staff redundancies spanning across several departments including Rachel’s.
After being made redundant, Rachel found a new position working in a small Customer Support team, and some of the products for which she provided support for are still in the MoreNiche network today. It was this role which provided the bridge to MoreNiche, and in June 2011, she began working for Twist in the role of Finance Coordinator. Throughout 2013, Rachel took on the Compliance role alongside her day to day Finance activities, and spent the first half of 2014 helping create and launch PetOffers, the UK’s first dedicated pet affiliate network. Throughout these varying roles, Rachel’s writing skills have always been in demand by the business and so, in June 2014, three years after starting work with the company, she was offered a permanent position as group copywriter, a role which encompasses copywriting, content writing, proof-reading and editing. It’s hard to combine all of these tasks into one job title, so you can just call her the word girl.
Outside of work, you can often find Rachel reading (not surprisingly), watching various TV box-sets, or working out at the gym.
What is your favourite drink?
It used to be Sambuca with Lemonade and Lime, but a few too many nights out on the Sambuca shots with the MoreNiche team put a swift end to that. I now prefer a more mellow cocktail of Amaretto with Orange Juice.
What is your favourite film?
Who is your childhood hero?
Jareth the Goblin King from Labyrinth and Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh.
Where is your favourite place?
California. Or my bed. My bed in California would be preferable.
What qualifications do you hold?
CTL Trained Copywriter (Pass with Distinction)
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?
Not so much about myself but who I’m related to. My sister is the first British athlete and second woman in history to win medals in two different sports at the summer Olympic Games (Rowing and Cycling).
What is your favourite Picture/Image?
David Bowie: The Archer. This iconic image of David Bowie as the Thin White Duke preparing to fire his imaginary bow and arrow was taken in 1976 during his Station to Station / Isolar tour. This pose was the signal for Bowie’s lighting engineer to kill the lights. It’s just perfection.
Do you have children/pets? Tell us about them:
My two black and white cats, Noah and Nieve. They were both rescued from the RSPCA. Noah was abandoned alone in an empty house when his owners moved away and left him behind, and Nieve was found on the streets at a few months old. Noah is a big, cantankerous, food obsessed bully, and Nieve is a tiny, timid, gentle little sweetie. I’m not ashamed to say that they are my children!
What would you like to be when you grow up?
Sarah from the Labyrinth, living in the Castle beyond the Goblin City, with Jareth the Goblin King.
How would your best friend describe you?
A bit of an Eeyore. I’m an eternal pessimist and I love to have a good rant every now and then (ok, frequently).
What is your biggest achievement to date?
Completing Insanity (supposedly the hardest workout ever put onto DVD) and surviving an hour long live Insanity workout with Shaun T himself in Manchester. For a self-confessed lazy person, that’s quite an achievement.
If you could recommend one website online, what would it be and why?
Showbiz, music, movie, TV and tech news all in one place!
