There’s a lot to learn when starting out as an affiliate marketer, but I don’t need to tell you that! You may need to learn how to build a website, research how to create valuable content, traffic generation techniques, social media marketing techniques and of course, get to grips with the ever-changing world of SEO. Fortunately there are ample resources available to fill in your knowledge gaps. Not least MoreNiche’s own comprehensive training courses.
But that’s not it. There’s another aspect to becoming a successful affiliate marketer. One you can’t learn from an online course.
It’s not just about the tools, tricks and training, it’s about you. To see what it takes to make money with affiliate marketing, I asked some successful affiliates to describe affiliates in three words. The following six personality traits were the most popular responses.
Think you have what it takes? You probably possess most, if not all, of the following qualities:
Ideally you will feel passionate about your chosen niche and enjoy the everyday tasks required. The good thing is you can tie your affiliate career in with a topic about which you feel passionately. For example, if you’re a bit of a gym-bunny, you may enjoy creating content about workouts and promoting sports nutrition products alongside your content.
Why is it important to be passionate about your work? Motivation. You’ll find it much more appealing to sit down and write about a hobby or interest, and this is likely to reflect in the quality of your content.
The Confidence to Take Risks
To make money with affiliate marketing, often you first need to spend a little. You at least need to invest a great deal of your time. It can be daunting to put so much into a project which is not guaranteed to pay off. But if you have the confidence to take risks like this, affiliate marketing could certainly be a career for you.
Of course, you can minimise any risk by doing all that you can to ensure your desired result, most likely through thorough research and hard work.
You need to be able to avoid the temptation of short-term gains and stick to a long-term plan.
A Strong Work Ethic
Working for yourself as an affiliate marketer means that your income is entirely dependent upon how much time and effort you put into your work. This work mostly requires you to sit at home alone at your computer where there is an abundance of distractions. Remaining focused and organised in this situation is easier for some than others.
You can definitely teach yourself to be better at this but it will always take time to adapt.
To really make money with affiliate marketing it helps to have imagination. The most successful websites and promotions are those which stand out in some way. This is easier said than done in this competitive business. You need to be inventive and resourceful, the more creative your content, the more shareable and memorable it is.
Some people do start to make money using black hat affiliate marketing techniques; putting their ethics aside to climb the search engine rankings. But if you choose to do this you will need to be ready to see your income disappear in a heartbeat when Google catches you and punishes your site.
Affiliates with more integrity will continue to make money with affiliate marketing long after those without.
It’s not only about avoiding black-hat techniques, it’s also about honesty and respect for your visitors. Research the products you plan to promote and be sure to stick to the merchant’s claims. A more trustworthy site means a better user experience which in turn means longevity for your business.
Digital marketing technology is advancing at a phenomenal rate so changes in the affiliate marketing industry are regular. If you’re someone who struggles with change, you may just struggle with this industry.
You need to be able to embrace change and adapt to it. It could be that Google updates its algorithm which means a quick update is required to ensure your site survives. It could be that the merchant you are promoting makes drastic changes to their brand, meaning a complete overhaul of your content. There will always be changes and you need to be someone who can accept, or even welcome them.
One of the best things about being an affiliate manager is the wide range of different personalities with whom I get to work. Affiliates do not fit one mould, they come from all walks of life from across the globe. There are however, certain qualities which most successful affiliates share.
