Tom Geraghty

Head of Technology

PERSONAL BIO

I’ve been working in technology for over 15 years now, from my first tech role as a sysadmin in 2004 to my current role at MoreNiche, where I’m responsible for everything from website performance and usability to telecommunications and data protection. Before the bright lights of tech beckoned to me, my background was actually in biotechnology and plant science. My first proper job was as an “Experimentalist” in the Weed Science department at Syngenta in London. I lived on a narrowboat which I had to move every three months, and I loved it.

Now, I live in a house made of bricks, and my career focus is primarily on scaling DevOps and high-performance technology teams. I utilise Agile, Scrum, Lean Principles, Safety Culture, and System Thinking to improve performance, and I sincerely believe that not only does culture trump strategy, but happiness precedes success.

Over the past few years I’ve spoken about DevOps at conferences, appeared on podcasts, and contributed a chapter to a book. In fact, now I’m writing a book about the evolution of DevOps. I’ve also learned that writing a book is much, much harder than I expected.

Outside of work, I like to spend as much time outdoors as possible, whether it’s mountain biking in the Peak District or hiking in the Scottish highlands. I also practise yoga, and qualified as a yoga teacher a few years ago with Frog Lotus Yoga in Andalusia in Spain. My partner and I love travelling, and we recently spent 9 months backpacking around Southern Europe and SE Asia and Nepal, the highlight of which was trekking to Annapurna Base Camp in the Himalayas.

Q&A

Why did you want to work at MoreNiche?

The culture at MoreNiche is excellent. Not only do we work hard and get stuff done, but we enjoy ourselves whilst we’re here. There’s very little hierarchy, and if something is a good idea, we’ll do it. As an organisation, we also truly value our team members not just as employees but as human beings with families and lives outside work. All this makes it a great place to work.
